A NOTE ON THE LAB’S STANCE ON COLOR-CONSCIOUS CASTING

What is color-conscious casting, and why is it important? Color-conscious casting intentionally chooses an ethnically diverse cast for shows originally written without diversity in mind. It’s important because representation matters. Theatre is better when all stories are told, not just those of a single segment of society. Intentional color-conscious casting goes hand-in-hand with seeking shows that have a universal appeal to audiences of all ethnicities, genders, and sexual orientations.

While some playwrights dictate specific ethnicities in their work, The Laboratory Theater of Florida is committed to offering opportunities on our stage for ethnically diverse actors. We encourage everyone to audition for our straight plays on either January 27th from 1 pm - 4 pm or January 30th from 6:30 pm - 9:30 pm. Registration is encouraged. The theater will accept walk-ins in order of arrival as time allows. If you don’t have a monologue, the theater will provide one.

Alien: A Parody

SHOW INFO - Alien: A Parody

Book and lyrics by Annette Trossbach, music by W. Earl Sparrow.

With book and lyrics by Laboratory Theater artistic Director Annette Trossbach and music by Earl Sparrow, this brand new musical parody of the iconic 1979 film Alien makes its world premiere on our stage this June. Enjoy songs like “Why Mansplaining is For Your Own Good,” “ Everyone Who’s Homophobic is Secretly Gay,” and the tap-dancing show stopper “Sacrifice.” This motley crew of cosmonauts and cephalopods will have you laughing, applauding, and rooting for our alien, who just wants to be a mom.

This hilarious Lab original parody is a world premiere.

KANE Male, administrator, light enough to be carried - a suck-up to those who outrank him

LAMBERT Female, interstellar navigator, queer, curvy

DALLAS Male, ship captain, 40s

ASH Male, robot masquerading as human, science officer, helmet-hair

RIPLEY Female, warrant officer, 30

PARKER Male, engineer, queer, southern

BRETT Male, engineer, a dumb hunk, athletic/acrobatic, appears shirtless

JONES cat

ALIEN A mother, a fighter

CHORUS Aliens, stars, except for one solo vocalist, must tap dance (3-5)

REHEARSALS, TECH WEEKS & SHOWS

Rehearsals will start the first week of April.

TECH WEEK is May 29 - June 4.

PERFORMANCE DATES: June 5 & 6 (half-price preview nights), with opening night on June 7th and through June 29th.

Audition Requirements: Please prepare a 90-second comedic monologue and 32 bars of a fun, comedic song.

CLYDE'S

This vivid and transformative play, full of heart and humor, reminds us that whatever challenges life throws at us, we can overcome. Clyde rules over a run-down sandwich shop staffed by ex-cons who find creativity and hope in their jobs, despite the outrageous leadership of their devilish boss.

CHARACTER DESCRIPTIONS:

Jason: 25-35. Male. White. Working class. Funny. Ex-con. Had white supremacist affiliation while incarcerated. Goes from being seen as a threat to being open and vulnerable.

Clyde: Female. 30s-50s. African American. Great comedic chops. Big personality. Seductive. Brash. Controls the room. Delights in humiliating others. Runs truck stop.

Montrellous: Male. 30s to 50s. African American. Wise, mindful. Served many years in prison. Interested in healing. Sensitive and caring, particularly to the younger generation. Uses cooking as a means of meditation.

Rafael: Male. 25-30. LatinX. Formerly incarcerated. A romantic. Loves food. In love with Letitia. Funny. Playful. Recovering. Working to find a more spiritual path. Full of charm. Terrified of his boss.

Letitia: Female. 25-30. African American. Recently released from prison, she is trying to build her life up again. Mother to a daughter with health issues. Her job is important to her even when the atmosphere is toxic. A romantic, she is looking to find a genuine partner. She is a survivor, working towards building a mindful path. Very funny.

REHEARSALS, TECH WEEKS & SHOWS

Rehearsals start early June.

Tech Week is July 17th -July 23rd.

PERFORMANCE DATES: July 24 & 25 (half-price previews). The show opens on July 26th and runs to August 11th.
